JK Rowling Drew Inspiration Of Professor Umbridge From Her Own Old School Teacher
JK Rowling has once again treated her fans by an inside scoop of her Harry Potter characterization. The author has revealed herself that the professor Hogwarts in her story is actually based on one of her school teachers.
The said character is the toad faced Professor Dolores Umbridge who once forced Harry Potter to cut the words 'I must not tell lies' on to his hand. As per the author, surprisingly she got the inspiration for her distasteful teacher from one of her own school teacher.
Rowlings did not reveal the identity of the woman. However, she remembers clearly that she disliked that teacher very much on sight. She had a pronounced and exaggerated taste for girlish accessories and dresses as recalled by the author. These and many other features are common between her old teacher and her story's character such as her old teacher also had curly brown hair in which she used to pin a lemon colored tiny little plastic bow slide.
The author admitted that she borrowed the same characterization for the Professor Umbridge of being donning sickly sweet girlish dress and perching a fly-like ornament on her head. The author was quick to add that her teacher was not a bad person and she is not sure why she disliked her so much.
There is another person also who has come in the author's life to strengthen her belief in the fact oversweet taste in accessories and clothing can be a reflection of the inner dark side of the personality. In her own words, 'a taste for the ineffably twee can go hand-in-hand with a distinctly uncharitable outlook on the world.'
Once, the author used to share her office with a cunning woman who used to cover the wall space behind her desk with pictures of fluffy kittens. This episode in her life has also influenced the character of Professor Umbridge who has an affinity for frolicsome feline.
The revelations has been made on Rowling's Pottermore website. Professor Umbridge is a half-blood witch who first appeared in fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and was installed at Hogwarts by the Ministry of Magic. She is an infamous character who is known for sacking Hagrid and inventing instruments of torture.
