ABC's comedy series "Modern Family" is gunning for its sixth consecutive Emmy Award next year for "Best Comedy Series" and with high expectations, the show's creators are pulling out all the stops. The cast had been spotted shooting what looks like a very bloody Halloween episode with most of the them in costumes. Sofia Vergara's new boyfriend, Joe Manganiello, even dropped by to see his princess in action.

Sofia may be 42 years old, but she still looks great both in real life and while in costume playing a cartoon character. The sexy Latina plays Gloria, the much younger Colombian wife of family patriarch Jay Pritchett. In photos from the Halloween special obtained by the Daily Mail, Vergara can be seen donning a Princess Fiona costume, a character popularised by the series of animated films in the "Shrek" franchise. In the films, Fiona is cursed and turns into an ogre and eventually meets and marries Shrek.

As for Sofia, she looks every bit a princess and not at all like an ogre, and judging by the look on boyfriend Joe Manganiello's face as he watches her scenes, he agrees. The two are pictured sharing some laughs and hugging in between takes.

Meanwhile, other members of the cast were also seen in their Halloween special costumes. Sofia's character Gloria was spotted with her on-screen family all in costume. Her son Manny was in a fedora and a dark grey suit. Jay, her husband in the series, looked regal in a period costume. The couple's young son Joe was in a donkey costume, another character from the "Shrek" films. Their family pet, "Stella," was also in on the action with her own little cat ears.

Meanwhile, in stark contrast to the Delgado-Pritchett's well put together costumes, the Dunphys are looking messy and bloody. Haley Dunphy was spotted with messy hair and a hospital gown that was cinched tightly at the waist to show off her figure. She also flashed some cleavage in the low neckline provided by the gowns overlapping lapels.

Haley wasn't the only one bringing the sexy in the episode as Phil Dunphy was spotted in a blue checked shirt that was unbuttoned all the way in front. In another scene, Phil was seen in rainbow-coloured track pants, while Haley seemed to be wearing a regular dress. In yet another scene, Sarah Hyland, who plays Haley, brought the sexy back again with a fiery red firefighter costume. Julie Bowen, who plays Claire Dunphy was keeping with Haley's hospital gown costume by wearing a nurse uniform with similarly messy hair and lots of blood stains.

Season 6 of "Modern Family" premiered last week with the premiere episode "The Long Honeymoon." The next episode, entitled "Do Not Push" airs this week. The season's list of guest stars have yet to make an appearance, so far, and Steve Zahn's character as the Dunphy's neighbour from hell is one of the much-anticipated additions.
