Jon Jones Headlining Wrestlemania 31 A Hoax, UFC Talent Trolling CM Punk
Just as the mixed martial arts world was shook by the announcement that Phil "CM Punk" Brooks is jumping ship to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), light heavyweight champion followed suit and took to twitter a surprise announcement that he is headlining WWE's Wrestlemania 31. Many wrestling followers were ecstatic by the news only to be disheartened by the clarification that the UFC light heavyweight champion was only trolling Punk and is staying in the Octagon.
BREAKING NEWS: I'm headlining wrestlemania 31.
— Jon Bones Jones (@JonnyBones) December 7, 2014
Jones was apparently just his way to get a slice of some attention given the tremendous online reaction to the former WWE talents transfer to the UFC. While it will take some time for Punk to establish some credibility and competitiveness in the MMA world, the work ethic of the former world heavyweight championship is being attested by many as his advantage to become a legitimate UFC talent. The other half of WWE Diva AJ Lee has been reported to previously train under Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach Rener Gracie who has nothing but praises for the former wrestler turned UFC talent. Gracie said that Punk trained with him in 2013 and has only resumed training recently, but his approach to the discipline is remarkable and it is not impossible that he will find some success in the UFC.
"But man, he's remarkable. He's in the top tier of students that I've ever worked with as far as his retention ability goes - his athleticism and his ability to train for long periods of time, because he's very resilient and very athletic," Gracie said per Fansided.com.
On the other hand, Jones' tweet was believed by many wrestling followers given that many mixed martial arts talents have already gone back and forth with both Dana White's and Vince McMahon's WWE and UFC, respectively. Proof of this if former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, who is the current WWE heavyweight champion of the world. Jones' announcement that he will be appearing in Wrestlemania 31 is not far-fetched as top talents such as him and Ronda Rousey have expressed some level of interest in appearing in a pay-per-view WWE event. Nevertheless, the playful banter by the dominant Jones is a good sign that he is considering some ring appearance in the future.
Still, it is unclear if "Bones" is agreeing to the decision of White to sign Punk to a UFC contract as he has been mum on his thoughts on the matter. The UFC light heavyweight champion is still at the peak of his career having disposed of top-tier talents such as Vitor Belfort, Rampage Jackson and Alexander Gustaffson. He still has the Daniel Cormier fight in the Jan. 2015 calendar so this leads some credence to the speculation that his breaking announcement of headlining Wrestlemania 31 in the summer of 2015 is a hoax.
