Josh Smith Chooses Houston Rockets Over Sacramento Kings, Dallas Mavericks
The Houston Rockets finally get the player they coveted two years ago. Recently waived Detroit Pistons player Josh Smith has picked the Houston Rockets over several other teams chasing him such as the Sacramento Kings, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis grizzlies, Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Clippers.
Smith has been promised the starting power forward slot by General Manager Daryl Morey which factored heavily into his decision. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports was first to break the news of his addition to the Western Conference power which only boosts the chances of the 20-7 Rockets. Smith joins childhood buddy and also Atlanta native Dwight Howard on a Houston team that is suddenly loaded after coming up empty in the off-season.
"Smith will sign a one-year deal with the Rockets for the biannual exception of $2 million after he clears waivers at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday. His agents, Brian Dyke and Wallace Prather, informed the Rockets of the decision on Wednesday afternoon, sources said," Wojnarowski revealed in his latest article.
The Rockets dealt away Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin in the offseason in an effort to add a third super star to flank Howard and arguably the best shooting guard in the league James Harden. The team thought it had the inside track on Miami Heat forward/center Chris Bosh, but the Heat star chose to re-up with the three-time NBA champions. Luckily, the Rockets were still able to snag away Trevor Ariza to replace Chandler Parsons who was pried away in restricted free agency by the Dallas Mavericks.
Smith now joins a starting line-up that may be one of the best in the NBA which includes, Howard, Harden, Ariza, and Patrick Beverly. The Rockets are suddenly deep in all positions with NBA-level talent rotation ballers such as Donatas Montejiunas, Jason Terry, Terrence Jones and Kostas Papanikolau. The development finally completes the long chase of the Rockets of the much maligned player. Houston is hoping that Smith can recapture the 2010 form that made him a coveted free agent in 2013. The Rockets tried to get him that year only to watch him pick the Pistons. Smith has finally cut ties with the Pistons who chose to make an addition by subtraction and focus on developing their young stars in Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond.
