A year ago, she was just living in a women's refuge. Today, she is the toast of the nation as the inaugural winner of "The Voice Australia."

With $100,000 cash in her bank account, Karise Eden can finally put down a deposit on a home of her own with a new car in the driveway and a recording contract in the mailbox. The 19-year-old singer from Central Coast north of Sydney, who was mentored by English singer Seal, erupted into squeals of joy when the announcement was made last night.

Karise Eden performed "Many Rivers To Cross" as a duet which drew the audience and the other judges to their feet. The lyrics were particularly touching for Eden. Throughout the competition, Eden has credited not only "The Voice" but Seal as well, whom she calls "The Perfect Coach'' with returning her self-esteem. Her performance brought Seal to his knees as he held her hand and sang with a rare smile beaming down on him from Eden.

Her interest in singing was sparked by a foster family who owned a music store. They introduced her to musical styles from the likes of Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse and Bon Jovi. Amazingly, her first singing lesson was when she sat down in a studio with Seal only a matter of weeks ago. Eden now heads to the studio to finish her winner's album. She will embark on a national victory lap later this month at Westfield Chermside on June 27 and Westfield Garden City on July 4.

It was her goodness that saw her out poll the other finalists, Queensland crooner Darren Percival in second place, show-ballad show-stopper Rachael Leahcar, third, and pop princess Sarah De Bono, fourth. "Australia should be really proud of the great talent that has come out of this country,'' Seal called out to all the contestants who have graced the stage. Auditions for season two of "The Voice Australia" are now open.
