J.R. Smith: 'Nets Still Not Good'
Leave it to New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith to stir some controversy even in an event as innocent as Q-and-A session with kid golfers.
In an article by Marc Berman of the New York Post, not only did Smith make a bold guarantee but mocked a rival team as well.
“100 per cent sure,” Smith answered when queried if the Knicks will go all the way to the NBA title in the upcoming 2013-2014 season.
“The Nets weren’t very good. Now they are still not good,” referring to the Brooklyn Nets which will further fuel the rivalry between the two franchises.
In August, Paul Pierce was a guest in a New York radio station 98.7 and spoke about the rivalry.
“Everybody knows how much I dislike the Knicks as a Celtic but it’s grown to a whole another level. Now, it’s like crosstown, over the bridge, this is the rivalry. This is really the rivalry… I think it’s time for the Nets,” said Pierce, who was part of the Brooklyn-Boston deal that also included Kevin Garnett.
Via an interview with ESPN NY, Smith reacted afterwards calling out the player known as The Truth.
"He doesn't really know what New York is all about. He's been playing in Boston his whole career. He just knows, just know that his words have consequences and he's going to have to pay for them,” Smith said.
Smith was named the 6th Man of the Year in the 2012-2013 season after averaging 18.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Smith and the Knicks will meet Pierce and the Nets for the first time in the new season on December 5, 2013.
