Jules Bianchi Latest Update: F1 Driver's Father Says Son In A Desperate Situation
It has been two weeks since the horrific crash at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka nearly took the life of Marussia Formula One Team driver Jules Bianchi. The 25-year-old French driver is still in a hospital in Japan and his father describes his condition to be a desperate situation.
Philippe Bianchi, along with Jules' mother, Christine, flew to Japan immediately after the crash. The incident occurred on Oct. 5, 2014 during the 43rd lap of the Suzuka Grand Prix. Adrian Sutil, another driver who was running ahead of Bianchi, had previously crashed during the lap and yellow flags were consequently raised. The track was wet due to ongoing rains brought about by a typhoon that was coming into Japan during the race weekend.
Sutil's car lay on the run-off area after it had hit the tyre barriers and Bianchi lost control at almost exactly the same place as Sutil. Unfortunately, Sutil's car was in the process of being removed from the track and Bianchi's car hit the back of the recovery vehicle instead of the safety barriers and tyre wall.
The race was immediately halted after Bianchi's crash and he was rushed to the track's medical facility. He was then immediately transferred to a hospital in nearby Yokkaichi. No word was immediately heard about the driver's situation until several hours later when it was announced that he had undergone surgery for severe head injuries and remains in "critical but stable" condition.
"The situation is desperate. Every time the phone rings we know it could be the hospital to say Jules is dead," Jules' father Philippe said as quoted by the British Web site Express. Many of Jules' colleagues also expressed their distress in the days following the accident and many took to social media to give their support. "But first they said the first 24 hours were crucial, then it became 72 and now we are still here, with Jules who is fighting," Philippe further explained.
After two weeks, no other updates have been given except that Jules is still unconscious. The Scuderia Ferrari team has sent a specialist to Japan to work closely with the Japanese doctors to advise the family on further treatment in case it becomes possible to move the patient back to Europe. Bianchi is a product of the Ferrari driver academy and got his first Formula One seat as a test driver with the team before driving for Marussia.
