Julia Gillard’s Wannabe Underestimated for Lalor Pre-Selection
A twenty-nine year old Diplomat to Papua Guinea, Lisa Clutterham , who looked up to ousted Prime Minister Julia Gillard stood in pre-selection for one of Australian labor Party's safest seats in Lalor.
However, in spite of having a strong political figure to look up to, Ms Clutterham raises eyebrows when she admitted that she had no connection to Melbourne and that she had just been a member of the Labor Party for a month.
In an interview with ABC Radio, the young Julia Gillard Wannabe admitted, "I don't have a connection with Melbourne and that's not something I'm shying away from. But I have been presented with an incredible opportunity to nominate for the seat of Lalor for pre-selection. My partner has a family there and as a child he visited Werribee on many Christmas holidays. I have visited Melbourne. Melbourne is a great city and I'm sure many Australians that live in various parts of Australia have visited Melbourne."
"As someone who has over the past few years had a growing resolve to pursue a career in politics, a career which I think is the highest form of public service, it's an opportunity that I haven't been able to say no to and that I'm extremely excited about."
She was then asked about her just recent membership with Labor, Ms Clutterham said, "it isn't much a pedigree. But I'm in the camp of the majority of Australians, 99 per cent of whom are not members of political parties. And as a young person my immediate priority has been completing my university education and building a career before politics as an Australian diplomat. That was my focus."
"I have built a life before politics, just because you have not followed that traditional pathway it should not preclude you from putting up your hand to represent constituency."
In a report from AAP, Ms Gillard had already endorsed former local primary school principal Joanne Ryan for the Lalor seat.
Ms Clutterham was asked to comment about the possibility that if she was handed the Lalor seat, it can be considered as the final rebuke against Ms Gillard.
Ms Clutterham said, "She is a role model of mine as Australia's first female prime minister. I am confident she would have nothing but encouragement for young, aspiring female politicians."
Trade Minister Richard Marles, a member for the Victorian seat of Corio was reportedly in Support of Ms Clutterham to have the seat. Mr Marles is a close ally to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
