The Catholic figurehead is the most talked about person online for 2013 to the point that his Twitter handle @pontifex became one of the most used words for the year, according to the Daily Mail.

The numbers came from The Global Language Monitor (GLM), sources said. The American analytics firm uses online tools in tracking conversations on social media and blogs.

Kate Middleton: Most Talked About Briton

Kate Middleton is the most talked about personality from the British Isles. The Duchess of Cambridge Catherine is still referred to by her maiden name Kate Middleton when she was not yet married to Prince William.

Ed Snowden + NSA

Edward Snowden and the NSA made it to GLM's Top 5 when he revealed that the National Security Agency (NSA) accesses people's records. The former CIA employee's name is almost as widely talked about as the Pontiff himself.

Top Words, Top Names, Top Phrases

Top words for 2013 includes 404, Fail, Hashtag, @pontifex, The Optic, Surveillance, Drones, Deficit, Sequestration, and Emancipate.

According to the Texas-based GLM, top phrases include "toxic politics, federal shutdown, global warning/climate change, federal deficit, tread lightly, Boston strong, marathon bombing and chemical weapons."

Other phrases in the top 15 include "all time high, rogue nukes, near-earth asteroid, Arab Spring, solar max and big data."

Pope Francis Followed By ObamaCare

Pope Francis is followed by ObamaCare then by NSA and Ed Snowden. Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton comes in on 5th place followed by the Internal Revenue Service.

Texas Senator and Tea Party Supporter Ted Cruz is on 7th. Cruz is followed by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie while the Tea Party comes in on 9th.

Many people also searched for the Marathon Bombers referring to the Boston Marathon. Pakistani Malala Yousafzai is also one of the most talked about people online after she was shot by freedom fighters for going to school.
