It wasn't a secret that Katy Perry's strict pastor parents had been against her relationship with known playboy Russell Brand from the beginning, but many people didn't know that they were actually glad that their daughter divorced him. The "Part of Me" songstress revealed that her mother thanks God for her divorce.

"I thank God every day for having made us all the same and I pray for anyone who fights for freedom of speech. I'm pro-gay marriage and want equality between genders," Katy was quoted by The Sun as saying.

And in an apparent slip of the tongue, Katy suddenly added, "My mom thanks God every day for my divorce. "

Katy, 28, married Russell, 37, in October 2010 in India. He filed for divorce in December 2011, citing irreconcilable differences, and their divorce was finalised the following July.

For Russell, however, he only had nice things to say about Keith and Mary Hudson, Katy's parents.

"Her parents were lovely," he had told Howard Stern on his Sirium/XM radio show just days after his divorce was finalised in July. He even added that he had a good relationship with them because they identified with his spiritual quest through meditation and yoga.

The British comedian and the American singer are tight-lipped on why they split. According to some reports, it was Katy's refusal to start a family that led to their divorce.

"I loved her so much that it just seemed like the sensible thing to do," he told in the same interview.

"...This isn't really working out, it's a difficult situation... I was really, really in love with her, but it was difficult to see each other," he continued. "She's young, successful, and dedicated... You can't fully understand it until you do. I was really into the idea of marriage and having children."
