Film director Kevin Smith has decided to buck Hollywood convention and distribute his movie Red State via his production company, SModcast.

In a surprise move, Smith decided to buy the rights to distribute his 4 million movie for $20 during its auction. The movie will be promoted through a road tour around the country and buzz around the film generated through word of mouth.

The film is a horror thriller about a minister, played by Michael Parks, and his violent rampage against a murderous group of federal agents mixed in with sex-crazed teens thrown in for good measure.

Mtv.com confirms that tickets for the road tour will cost about $60. Screenings will be held in Radio City Music Hall in New York City on March 5 as part of the 13 city tour. The film will begin showing in theaters beginning October 19.

Smith is well-known for his movies Clerks, Dogma, Chasing Amy, Zack and Miri Make a Porno.
