Danny Nickerson, a 6-year-old boy with cancer who received more than 150,000 greeting cards for his birthday passed away, April 24, reported the Inquisitr. He was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rare yet intrusive type of tumour that occurs in approximately 300 children annually.

"My precious sweet boy earned his angel wings earlier this afternoon after a courageous 18 month battle," read a recent post on Danny’s Facebook page, "Danny's Warriors". "Our lord came and carried his body to heaven. His body was so tired of fighting. He is now cancer free and running and playing and laughing with God and all of the other precious children."

Danny can be remembered as the boy who received an overwhelming response when he wished for mails for his birthday last year, reported the CNN. His request went viral online, and by the time of his birthday, he received more than 100,000 cards from all over the world. According to CBS Boston, the amount of stuff that they had to let Danny open were just overwhelming, said Daniel Jamieson, the father of Danny.

One of the groups who helped Danny’s wish came true was the New England Patriots football team who plays in Foxboro, where Danny’s family lives. "Extending our deepest sympathies to the family of Danny Nickerson," read a tweet from the New England Patriots’ official page. "We're honored to have met him."

On the “Danny’s Warriors” Facebook page, lots of supporters extended their sympathies and condolences to the family. Many said that they took inspiration from Danny’s strength, which he clearly exhibited in the midst of his life’s most trying times. More than the joy he experienced from receiving thousands of birthday cards, his character and inspirational determination will always be remembered.
