North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s ex-girlfriend was reportedly executed by firing squad. Unconfirmed reports claim that Hyon Song-wol was arrested and was executed in public for violating North Korean laws against pornography.

South Korean paper The Chosun Ilbo has cited sources in China that said Hyon, a singer, and 11 other “well-known North Korean performers” were arrested on August 17 and executed three days later.

They were accused of videotaping themselves while having sex and selling the videos, which have apparently reached China as well. Some of them also allegedly had Bibles in their possession, and all were treated as political rebels.

Those executed include Mon Kyong-jin, the head of the Unhasu Orchestra in North Korea, the all-female group Moranbong Band, and the singers, musicians, and dancers of the group and of Wangjaesan Light Music Band.

“They were executed with machine guns while the key members of the Unhasu Orcestra, Wangjaesan Light Band, and Moranbong Band, as well as the families of the victims looked on,” a source told the paper.

And as under North Korea’s principle of guilt by association, the families of the executed appeared to have been sent to prison camps.

Hyon was allegedly the ex-girlfriend of the current North Korean dictator. Their relationship began about a decade ago, but Kim was ordered to break up with her by his father Kim Jong-il. Hyon, a famous singer in the country who recorded a string of patriotic songs, then married a soldier, while Kim married another singer, Ri Sol-ju, who was a member of the Unhasu Orchestra before she got married.

Rumours surfaced that Kim and Hyon’s relationship did not end with their respective marriages to other people. They apparently still continued to see each other.

It’s unclear whether Ri had any hand in the executions.
