Kiwi pop sensation Lorde is set to conquer the international market with a fail-proof move: take a swipe at other famous artists like Taylor Swift and Lana del Rey. The relatable 16-year-old songstress said she stays away from writing songs about “unattainable opulence” and ex-boyfriends.

Her first song “Royals” debuted at number one in New Zealand, and was described by the Observer in the UK as “the most deliciously radio-ready critique of wealth you’ll hear this year.”

“Royals” described the glamorous lifestyle of the rich and famous, while Lorde and her friends are living the opposite reality.

She told the paper, as reported by the New Zealand Herald, that she got the idea from listening to Del Rey, Kanye West, Jay-Z, and other celebrities.

“What really got me is this ridiculous, unrelatable, unattainable opulence that runs throughout. Lana Del Rey is always singing about being in the Hamptons or driving her Bugatti Veyron or whatever, and at the time, me and my friends were at some house party worrying how to get home because we couldn’t afford a cab.

“This is our reality.”

Despite being famous in her home country, Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, isn’t living the high life yet. In fact, she can barely afford Subway.

“My card just declined buying subway that cost $8,” she wrote on Facebook as caption for her picture of a Subway bag. She told her followers that she had to return an M&M cookie so she could buy a pork riblet.

She also revealed to New York magazine that she didn’t have millions or even thousands of dollars in her bank.

“I get recognised, which is weird, when I’m at a restaurant and I’ve got my mouth full of food. And because I currently have a single digit in my bank account.”

Lorde is currently working on a full-length album, which she said will “paint this picture of who I am as an artist.” The new album, which she will release in September, will have songs that are more intimate and will be about relationships with people.

Just don’t expect it to be about ex-boyfriends, though, because Lorde said she tries to stay away from talking about boys all the time, saying, “You can go to Taylor Swift to hear that.”

The magazine also asked her what she thinks about U.S. celebrity Amanda Bynes, who has been bashing everyone, from Miley Cyus and Rihanna to her own father.

“I don’t know,” she said. “I don’t think she’s fine. She’s so nasty to everyone. Even Courtney Love!”

Lorde’s “The Love Club” debuted at #2 on the album chart in NZ. She also released her single “Tennis Court” last month at #1.
