The New Zealand horror comedy flick “What We Do in the Shadows” is set to have its Sundance Film Festival premiere in January. Kiwi director Taika Waititi has announced that his vampire mockumentary has been selected to premiere at the film festival in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Co-written and co-directed with Jemaine Clement, the feature-length film, shot in Wellington in 2012, is based on the duo’s 2006 short film of the same name.

It follows the story of a group of centuries-old vampires who live in a flat in Wellington. Their constant thirst for blood makes it hard for them to make new friends. And without any mortal friends left to invite them around the town, they are basically left as outcasts who are unable to adapt to modern society.

“Consider the living quarters of vampires and stodgy old castles in Transylvania might come to mind,” the film overview reads. “But these aren’t your typical bloodsuckers. Viago (379 years old), Deacon (183 years old), Vladislav (862 years old), and Peter (8,000 years old) have chosen to share a flat in Wellington, New Zealand.

“Unfortunately for them, it’s hard to make new friends due to their constant thirst for blood. Without any mortal chums left to invite them in to all of the hip establishments around town, they’ve lost touch with the current social scene. Can these creatures of the night put aside their differences as roommates and adapt to modern society?”

Both Waititi and Clement star in their film, alongside Jonathon Burgh, Cori Gonzales-Macuer, and Stu Rutherford.

“What We Do in the Shadows” will premiere at the Egyptian Theatre, Park City at 11:59 pm on January 19. As part of the Midnight section, the film is not up for competition in the festival.

Sundance Film Festival will be held from January 16 to 26.
