Weight issues
Being overweight has become one of the major sources of depression among teenagers. Mostly, they look up to their favorite actress or stage performers to find a model for an ideal physical figure. Instead of consulting their parents, they seek the advice of fellow peers.
Many of today's teenagers and young adults suffer from weight-related problems. Statistics from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have shown that childhood obesity increased in 2008. From 1980 to 2008, obesity increased from 7 per cent to 20 per cent for children aged 6 to 11.
In the latest survey conducted by Health Survey for England, findings concluded that in 2009, 61.3 per cent of British aged 16 and up and 28.3 percent of children aged two to 10 are obese or overweight. Of these figures, 23 per cent were obese adults and 14.4 per cent were obese children.
Prevention is the Best Cure
Health experts have long warned of the ill effects of overweight and obesity in long terms. Immediate health effects of childhood obesity include pre-diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and high vulnerability to bone and joint problems. Meanwhile, among its long-term effects are osteoarthritis, certain cancers, heart diseases, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
Lifestyle plays a crucial role in molding a person. This includes the psycho-mental aspect. A healthy lifestyle is almost always conducive to good health including healthy weight. Lifestyle is also known to be a good cultivator of good traits like self-discipline and self-control, both of which are helpful in trimming down the weight and maintaining it on a healthy level.
In the United States CDC, officials encourage parents and young ones to cultivate healthy lifestyle habit such as eating healthy and balanced food and engaging in physical activity.
The schools, too, have contributing factors by maintaining safe and supportive environment. This can be done by implementing policies and practices leading to healthy behaviour.
