Christmastime doesn't only entail gifts, but award ceremonies as well, the latest of which is the Los Angeles Film Critics Awards.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association announced their picks at an award celebration Sunday, and just like the others, the 2011 version of the annual event showed a fusion of the obvious and the less so.

George Clooney's dramedy starrer "The Descendants" took the Best Picture trophy, while taking home the Best Actor win was this year's breakout actor Michael Fassbender, whose recognized projects include "Shame", 'X-Men: First Class", "A Dangerous Method" and "Jane Eyre".

Christopher Plummer, who played Ewan McGregor's gay father in "Beginners", won the Best Supporting Actor award, besting the other's critics award's common choice - "Drive's" Albert Brooks.

On the women's side, the association skipped over the usual Hollywood bets and gave the Best Actress honor to South Korea's Yun Jung-hee in her portrayal of an Alzheimer's-stricken grandmother in "Poetry".

The Best Supporting Actress prize was given to newcomer Jessica Chastain, who's also also experiencing strings of breakout awards like Fassbender, for her supporting roles on six films: "Coriolanus", 'The Debt", 'The Help", "Take Shelter", "Texas Killing Fields" and "The Tree of Life".

Bagging the Best Director recognition was Terrence Malick, who helmed the experimental family drama "The Tree of Life" that starred Brad Pitt and Chastain. The film was runner-up to "The Descendants" for the 'best picture' honor.

In technical territory, the critics awarded the Western comedy "Rango" with the Best Animation trophy. Dante Ferretti ("Hugo") and The Chemical Brothers ("Hanna") were honored with Best Production Design and Best Music Score, respectively.

Lastly, given the New Generation award is the team of Antonio Campos, Sean Durkin, Josh Mond and Elizabeth Olsen for their work in the psychological thriller "Martha Marcy May Marlene".

Noticeably absent is the French silent film "The Artist", which already took home the Best Picture accolade from the New York Film Critics Online.

Two more awards events are left - nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Golden Globes, which will hopefully give more clues for the prediction of winners on next year's Oscars.
