Labor minister calls for transparency under new government
The minority government established by the Labor Party should be the least concern of the financial markets since it is bound to operate in a transparent manner, according to Employment Minister Simon Crean when he spoke with reporters on Thursday.
The country saw its currency and share market absorbing forms of retreat on Tuesday as government was finally formed through the help of independent MPs and one parliament member that belongs to the Australian Greens.
Mr Crean noted that it has always been the case in the Senate, where the ruling Labor Party had to negotiate and seek consensus since the upper chamber was often dominated by political parties not aligned with the government.
He said that in order to pass crucial legislations, the federal government has been used to resorting to the negotiating table and the same scenario would be applied now in the House of Representatives with the reality that the government is largely ruling through the initiatives of the minority.
Mr Crean stressed that the good thing about the unusual set up is, as far as forging compromises and agreements are concerned, "it will be a more open and transparent operation and I think the market should welcome that."
