The Last of Us Gets Grounded Bundle, PS4 Remastered Details Discussed
Additional content is coming to The Last of Us, and it will be the final drop for the title as far as the Season Pass is concerned.
Titled The Last of Us: Grounded Bundle, there will be new trophies, single-player and multiplayer content, and the new Grounded Mode, which Naughty Dog community strategist Eric Monacelli says is the hardest challenge for the single-player campaign for The Last of Us.
This could be due to the relentless waves and intellect of the AI, making survival near impossible. Achieving the Completed Grounded Mode trophy really brings the much-needed pride in the trophies. Season pass holders need to pay $4.99 to get the Grounded Mode.
Guns and survival skills are your best ally in the Grounded Bundle, so you need to familiarize yourself with guns and abilities via the Survivalist Weapon Bundle, which is out for $5.99. There are four weapons all in all, the Double Barrel shotgun, the silent Specter for assaults, the Enforcer for high accuracy, and the Launcher for small explosives care of a homemade potato gun.
Survival Skills has two bundles, each worth $3.99. the first is the Situational Survival Skills, which unlocks four abilities. There's Agility for fast climbling, Awareness to see enemy nametags before they do you, Fortitude to help you survive longer, and Scavenger to pick up weapons and supplies and to increase drops from enemies.
The Professional Survival Skills Bundle also unlocks four abilities, most of which are for kills instead of surviving on a case-to-case basis. There's Gunslinger for spawning more ammo, Bomb Expert for a faster explosion time with the bombs you set up, Executioner for those who have risk-laden style of play, and Damage Marker for automatically marking enemies.
New maps for Reclaimed Territories Map Pack
As for the Reclaimed Territories Map Pack, it has four new maps named Wharf, Capitol, Coal Mine and Water Tower, each with trophies and a different location for the single-player campaign.
In a nutshell: Wharf features rusted-out docs where Joel meets Robert and the gamer has to deal with snipers and requires stealth. Capitol is in Boston and will feature indoor gameplay. Coal Mine is a winter map filled with abandoned buildings and spacious areas for sniping. And the Water Tower is in Lincoln, PA and is a mix of indoor and outdoor map. All of this is offered for $9.99 for non-season pass holders.
If those prices did sting a bit for season pass holders, Monacelli also announced a bit of good news for all players of The Last of Us.
"Finally, everyone--non-season pass holders, included--will be getting a new gun, the Full-Auto Rifle, for free. This is a fully automatic, modified burst rifle that is very easy to use. It's the perfect weapon for people who are new to Factions and experts alike," said the Naughty Dog team over at the PlayStation Blog.
But if you are interested in getting a season pass, it's still out for $19,99 until the week of May 13, wherein it will no longer be available after the PSN updates in your region.
Yoshida: Crossing the uncanny valley problem
For those who already have played The Last of Us on the PS3, the PS4 remastered version does not seem to add much to the experience. However, Sony Worldwide Studio boss Shuhei Yoshida has a different view of how The Last of Us, as well as other games, will be like on the PS4.
Speaking at the PlayStation Blogcast, DualShockers reports that, for Yoshida, the PS4 era tackles the "uncanny valley problem" in gaming.
"It's so amazing to be able to just cut a digital character and get how the character is feeling. That's where the game movement on the high end is going, so the great stories and games like The Last of Us, when these developers have the PS4 as canvass, those emotional moments will be even more impactful," said Yoshida during the blogcast as quoted by DualShockers.
What this means basically is that the PS4 is giving developers a whole new hardware to work with, one that is powerful enough to deal with the "uncanny valley" problem of the way imitating human features and emotions cannot come close to the real "natural" thing.
It would be interesting to see where the PS4 games go from this point forward, especially in the way that it would respond to competitor's own plans of improvement as in the case of the Xbox One and its much-debated DirectX 12 addition.
