The unexpected news that Laura Prepon is allegedly leaving Netflix's 'Orange is the New Black' has taken the social networking sites by storm. The news of her quitting the comedy-drama series has come as a shocker and has stunned her fans. She portrays the role of Alex Vause, the lesbian inmate, in the Netflix's original comedy-drama series.

Citing sources close to the team of the 'Orange is the New Black', Buzzfeed reported that Laura Prepon will not be a regular in the second season of 'Orange is the New Black'. She may just return to tie-up her character's loose-ends and will appear only in a few episodes. The actress, 33, has not yet signed her contract for the second season. However, there are chances that her character, Alex Vause, may return in the future.

The actress' representative has not yet confirmed the news. Netflix's representative, however, gave an ambiguous reply.

"It's not accurate," a Netflix representative said, as quoted by E-Online. "Our season is still developing and nothing is confirmed."

'Orange is the New Black' is based on Piper Kerman's memoir of the same name. The best-selling memoir describes her experience in the prison. In the Netflix's comedy-drama series, created by Jenji Kohan, suburbanite Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling, is convicted of smuggling drug money for Alex Vause, the lesbian drug smuggler and Chapman's ex-lover. She is sent to prison for 15 months. Prepon's character is also an inmate, serving her time in the same prison.

"When I first read this script, I thought, this was so awesome and different," Prepon said to NJ.com in an interview. "Jenji (Kohan) is such an amazing writer. My character is so cool. It's amazing to portray her."

"I kind of feel like I'm awake in a dream to be doing this kind of work, and this kind of work, reaching this many people, you know? Like a story that I think is really important and characters that I think we're ready to really ingest," Taylor told Access Hollywood.

The 13 episodes, second season of 'Orange is the New Black' is slated to premiere in 2014. 'Orange is the New Black' was renewed for a second season on June 27, 2013, before the first episode of the first season was aired in Netflix.
