Lauren Scruggs, Model in Propeller Accident, Loses Eye After Hand
Surgeons in Dallas Wednesday removed the damaged left eye of fashion model Lauren Scruggs, 10 days after she also lost her left hand when she accidentally walked into the rotating propeller of a small plane.
The surgeons at Dallas' Parkland Hospital replaced the eye with a prosthesis.
The family of Scruggs, 23, of Plano, Texas, said she is recovering but is still suffering from pain from her wounds.
Scruggs started eating solid foods and walking on the hospital hallway by herself Monday, according to her parents Cheryl and Jeff.
"Along with the pain she was already experiencing with her arm and shoulder injuries, the removal of the left is also very painful. We are asking again for prayer to relieve this pain, and also, as we have posted previously, pray for Lo to regain her appetite. This is crucial for her body to heal quickly," wrote Cheryl on the Web site www.caringbridge.org created for the model.
The family has also set up the Lauren Scruggs Hope Fund to help support her long-term recovery.
On Dec. 3, Scruggs and two friends viewed Christmas lights above Dallas aboard a small plane. Upon landing, the creator of the fashion Web site Lolo and former staff in the wardrobe department of the TV show "Gossip Girl," was saying goodbye to pilot Kurt Richmond of Frisco, Texas, when she accidentally hit the plane's propeller.
Richmond has refused interviews, though Scruggs' family does not blame him for the accident.
