Leighton Holdings (ASX: LEI) subsidiary Leighton Contractors says it has been awarded a $148 million contract by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and Bechtel to deliver the Broadmeadow Sustaining Operations Project at the Broadmeadow mine in Queensland.

The project involves the extension of an existing open cut pit at the mine to provide access for underground works.

The contract scope includes 8 million m³ of earthworks and 12,000m³ of concrete works, as well as the construction of associated infrastructure including access roads, dams and drainage, conveyor footings and gates.

Mike Metcalfe, Executive General Manager at Leighton Contractors, said the company was proud to have the opportunity to continue partnering with BMA in the region.

“Leighton Contractors has strong ties with the local Bowen Basin community and over ten years experience in delivering value added services for the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance in Queensland,” he said.

“Our local expertise and resources, coupled with our previous experience working at Broadmeadow, means we will bring considerable learnings to this project.
The project is due for completion in 2013.
