Lena Dunham Says She Was A Victim Of Sexual Assault In College In Her Shocking Tell All Book
Lena Dunham has talked about sexual assault, date rape and numerous failed relationship in her new tell all shocking book "Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's Learned." The book shocked her fans as the 28-year-old has revealed details about her sexual assault by a classmate at Oberlin College in Ohio.
The "Girls" star who graduated from Oberlin in 2008 revealed to Howard Stern in his chat show that it was not easy for her to write about that particular incident as she did not want her life to "turn into a headline." The actress further revealed that contrary to popular belief about colleges being safe, "campus assault is an epidemic."
Lena is of the opinion that there are large number of women who do not feel safe in their own college campus but end up blaming themselves for what happens to them. Lena herself chose to keep quiet about the whole incident as she felt it was a "huge private part" of who she was and moreover she was afraid of getting labelled as a "victim" too.
But Dunham finally chose to talk about the horrible incident that took place in her life as she wanted to "make peace" with herself and tell other girls going through the same that they should not blame themselves if someone forces to have a sexual act with them even if they agreed to it in first place.
"If you are in the middle of having sex and someone suddenly becomes forceful with you and makes you do things you don't want to do, that is the act of sexual assault," says Lena explaining the definition of "assault."
Lena then talks about "consent" in sexual act and says that "so many people don't understand what the meaning of consent is" adding that women end up blaming themselves for the mishap. The actress then reveals that when she was went through the sexual assault she was physically hurt and had to tell her mom to make an appointment with the doctor.
Lena had to lie that the whole thing happened because she was drunk. The only person who knew what exactly happened was her best friend at that time. The actress also confessed that it was very difficult for her to share the incident's details with her parents.
