Lenovo has started its global recall of batteries specific to ThinkPad models, citing fire hazard due to overheating of batteries.

Lenovo has recalled at least 155,000 ThinkPad batteries so far, according to ZDNet.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, two cases of battery overheating and causing damage to the nearby property was reported. Owing to the report, Lenovo launched the battery recall procedure.

The batteries from several ThinkPad models shipped to number of countries between October 2010 and April 2011 are to be recalled. Notably, the batteries were also sold separately as spare parts in case of replacement.

Here are the ThinkPad models with the aforementioned battery problem:

- ThinkPad W510

- ThinkPad T410, T420, T510 series

- ThinkPad X100E, X120E, X200, X201 and X201s Series

- ThinkPad Edge 11, Edge 13, and Edge 14 Series

A total of 34,500 units of ThinkPad series were shipped in the US and 2,900 in Canada, according to CSPC.

Apparently, China has the maximum shipped units with a whopping 117,732 batteries required to be replaced, according to Xinhua news bureau.

The batteries eligible for replacement have the following serial numbers: 42T4695, 42T4711, 42T4798, 42T4804, 42T4812, 42T4822, 42T4828, 42T4834, 42T4840 and 42T4890.

Lenovo will replace batteries free of cost irrespective of the warranty status.

According to Lenovo, "Until a replacement battery arrives, you should turn off the system, remove the battery, and only power your ThinkPad by plugging in the AC adapter and power cord."
