Leonardo DiCaprio Academy Award win kills Poor Leo memes, gives birth to new Oscar win memes

Leonardo DiCaprio winning an Oscar is everything the Internet has ever dreamed of. The online community was probably just as anxious as the actor himself in waiting for his name to be called for Best Actor at the 88th Academy Awards on Sunday. And now that he finally has the trophy, the Internet was quick to pull up new memes for this victorious moment.
The 41-year-old actor took home his long-awaited Oscar gong when he won for “The Revenant.” He was the favourite to win following his victories at the Golden Globes and BAFTA. As the netizens noted, his Oscar win has been decades in the making.
He was first nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1993 for his role as a mentally challenged boy in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” He has since been nominated three times for Best Actor for “The Aviator,” “Blood Diamond” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” in 2005, 2007 and 2014.
The Internet has been with him throughout his journey to Oscar triumph. There are countless memes to prove that. With his newly minted Academy Award win, however, these memes have died, and new ones are born.

DiCaprio himself wasn’t oblivious to the Internet’s fascination of his acting accolade. According to a clip shot by Variety at the Governors Ball, he asked the person engraving his name on the Oscar trophy if she did that every year. “I wouldn’t know,” he answered his own question, referring to the award being his first.
