Lewis Hamilton Holding His Title

In a season that has been completely dominated by the Mercedes GP team, it looks like the battle for the 2014 Formula One World Championship will only be an internal battle between the team's two drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

Former World Champion Lewis Hamilton took the Spanish Grand Prix victory for the first time in his career at the Circuit de Catalunya on Sunday, May 12, 2014. Hamilton took over the driver's championship lead from Rosberg by only three points. Hamilton led the most of the race starting in pole position and only relinquished his lead during pit-stops. Teammate Rosberg was never far behind and even looked to challenge Hamilton in the closing stages of the race finishing only .6 of a second behind.

Meanwhile, Red Bull who had seen dominance in the past four years, winning four World Championships for Sebastian Vettel, proved that they are the only team with a chance to close the gap to the Mercedes team by finishing third for Daniel Riccardo and fourth for Vettel. Defending World Champion Sebastian Vettel fought his way from 15th place on the grid to finish fourth after gearbox issues during qualifying. Meanwhile Riccardo, who was stripped of second place in the opening race in Melbourne due to an irregularity in his fuel flow, proved that he is truly a force to be reckoned with by finishing on the podium again.

The victory in Spain is Hamilton's fourth straight victory of the season. The only other race winner so far is his teammate Nico Rosberg who won the opening race in Melbourne. It is looking more and more likely that the Mercedes pair can sweep all 19 races of the season. Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso agrees: "They should be in a position to win all the races probably, so it is going to be tight between them, probably the championship will be decided by who finishes most races between them" he said.
