Humans are blessed with intelligence that surpasses that of other animals in the planet making us effectively, on top of the food chain, so to speak. But as with anything else, people look for more, and when it comes to intelligence, humans want to be smarter. But can humans transcend being normally smart and be super smart?

Thomas Hills of the University of Warwick doesn't believe so. According to Hills, evolution limits how smart humans can get and that anything smarter can lead to problems.

He explained that trade-offs are common in evolution. Citing humans' height, most people cap out under six feet because anything more than that, such as eight feet, then the heart will have a hard time getting the blood up the body.

Along with physical limitations, trade-offs in intelligence is apparent. Hills said that a baby's brain size is thought to be limited by, among other things, the size of the mother's pelvis. This is because anything bigger could mean deaths in childbirth, and changing the pelvis could affect how a person stands or walks.

When it comes to more abstract forms of intelligence like attention, drugs that enhance attention only help those with lower baseline abilities. If it were given to people who don't have problems paying attention, it can actually worsen the case. Hills pointed out that this suggests that there is some kind of upper limit to how much people can or should pay attention.

Just like memory - getting better memory is good but anything excessive can lead to a difficult life, because if something bad happens, a person won't be able to forget it, he noted.

Baring tread-offs in mind, Hills said that it is unlikely that there will ever be a super mind.

But for those who are fixed on improving their own intelligence and mind, there are a few things that they can do to get smarter. According to PickTheBrain.com, changes in everyday activities can help the brain.

An important thing to remember when it comes to improving intelligence is to minimize television watching. This is because watching the idiot box doesn't use a person's mental capacity, nor does it allow the brain to recharge. Exercising also helps tread the path to higher intelligence. After exercising, the body clears the head and creates a wave of energy, leaving a person invigorated which can lead to improved concentration.

People have heard it many times over, but reading books and catching some Zs is important for the brain. Reading books are generally mentally stimulating; while getting enough sleep can help a person concentrate, at the same time, make them feel rejuvenated.
