Actress Lindsay Lohan, 24, is finding herself in the middle of a controversy again with police charges for the theft of a $2,500 necklace.

Before police were able to apply a search warrant on Tuesday, the necklace was returned by an unnamed person. The necklace went missing at Kamofie & Co., a custom jewelry store in Venice Beach on Jan. 22. Three weeks prior to that Lohan was released court-ordered rehab at the Betty Ford Center. The latest treatment is her fifth stint in rehab.

District attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said that police filed a potential case against Lohan on Wednesday afternoon, although prosecutors have not yet made a decision whether to pursue the charges.

Los Angeles police investigation into the Lohan case is for possible grand theft. The newest charges add to Lohan's already troubled case since she is still under probation for 2007 drunken driving case. Inquiries sent to Lohan's attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, were not immediately returned.
