‘Lone Survivor’ on Top in Box Office Collection, ‘Hercules’ Trails Behind
The action flick "Lone Survivor" emerged as the top movie at the box office and "The Legend of Hercules" opened with poor response at the box office. Disney's family entertainer and animation movie "Frozen" is still going strong.
The "Lone Survivor" was able to collect over $38 million over the weekend, putting it on the top as the highest grossing movie over the weekend. "Hercules" was left trailing far behind collecting just over $8 million.
"Lone Survivor" is a story based on the "Operation Red Wings" which took place on June 28 2005. In the mission American soldiers had to travel deep into hostile territory to capture the notorious Taliban leader Ahmed Shahd.
The patriotic element of the movie along with theme of brothers in arms united in the face of insurmountable odds may have just worked. The movie has been able to pull the crowds to become a hit at the box office.
"Lone Survivor" is directed by Peter Berg and stars Mark Wahlberg as Marcus Luttrell, Taylor Kitsch as Michael Murphy, Emile Hirsch as Danny Dietz, Ben Foster as Matt "Axe" Axelson, Eric Bana as Erik Kristensen among others.
"Hercules" tracks the story of the mythical Greek hero and focuses on how he became the legend. The plot revolves around "Hercules" being betrayed by his stepfather. He is exiled and sold into slavery.
"Hercules" is seen returning to his stepfather's kingdom and use his extraordinary powers to fight and seek vengeance. The movie was not able to make a big impact at the box office in spite of the stunning graphics.
The movie is directed by Renny Harlin and stars Kellan Lutz as "Hercules," Gaia Weiss as Hebe, Scott Adkins as King Amphitryon, Roxanne McKee as Queen Alcmene, Liam McIntyre as Sotiris, Rade Serbedzija as Chiron and Johnathon Schaech as Tarak among others.
Movies releasing on Jan 17 2014 include "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," "Devil's Due," "The Nut Job," "Ride Along," "Like Father, Like Son," "Big Bad Wolves," "Back in the Day," "G.B.F.," "Reasonable Doubt," "Life of a King," "Jamesy Boy," and "Gloria."
"Lone Survivor" is expected to continue with its strong performance at the box office while "Hercules" will need to cover a lot of ground in order to recover an estimated budget of $70 million.
