Apparently, it has been a slow year for the movies.

Only one film was considered a success: the concluding installment of the 'Harry Potter' series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2", went on to become the third-biggest grossing movie of all time.

But even that was no match to the slump that Hollywood experienced this 2011, which is one of the worst in years.

Why? People simply did not go to the cineplex like they used to.

More importantly, none of the animated features released had a significant audience, well, at least not like the figures they have been gaining back then.

According to E!, none of them actually topped the year-end lists, as compared to 2010 which has five of these toons earning $200 million in the US, led by "Toy Story 3".

The rest of the world were better churners of high-profile offerings such as "Mars Needs Moms" and "Kung Fu Panda 2".

Ticket sales experienced its lowest this year since the early 1990s. A more expensive ticket didn't help the situation.

"Transformer 3", and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides", which both had only mild revenues domestically, also made better fortune overseas, each earning billion dollars.

Films that can be really considered as real successes aside from "Harry Potter 8" include "Bridesmaids", "Ghost Protocol" and "Breaking Dawn Part 1". However, the latter two are nothing compared to the performance of their predecessors, which are about $10 or $20 million more.

Hopefully, the following year would entail a new wind of success for future flicks, as long as they're deserving.

Meanwhile, here's a complete run down of the year's top 10 flicks, as compiled by BoxOfficeMojo.com (per domestic grosses):
