Lorde On Jennifer Lawrence: Singer Reveals How She Thinks Like JLaw While Writing 'Yellow Flicker Beat' From 'Hunger Games Mockingly Part 1' [Listen Here]
Lorde listened to a lot of spiritual songs like "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" when she was writing the song "Yellow Flicker Beat" for the "Hunger Games Mockingjay—Part 1" movie. The track has become so popular that it was won Lorde a nomination for a Golden Globe in the category of Best Original Song. It has also been included in the shortlist of songs that could win an Oscar. In her latest interview, Lorde not only describes what she underwent while composing this song but also reveals her "most empowering" line from it.
The New Zealand born singer talked about the idea behind the composition of the beautiful song. "I liked the idea of the film ending on this close-up of Katniss' face, and then this very creepy, cracked hum kind of signaling your entry into her head, her deepest thoughts and secrets," Lorde is quoted a saying by Los Angeles Times.
The teenage songstress further revealed that the song has been influenced by "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child," a traditional spiritual song. The multiple award-winning songstress said that she wanted the "Yellow Flicker Beat" song to have her influence as she did not want to feel out of place when she sung it during her concerts. The singer thought like the protagonist of the movie, Katniss Everdeen, as she began writing. "I wanted the song to feel almost stream-of-consciousness, very much Katniss' innermost thoughts, and when writing it, I could feel the lines blurring, my authorial voice overlapping with hers," Lorde is quoted as saying by the website.
Lorde also believes that Jennifer Lawrence's character has so many voices that are both "internal and external." She further compares Katniss' voices to a storm that is not quiet. The 18-year-old singer then talked about her favourite line from the song, which is the "fingers laced together and I made a little prison, and I'm locking up everyone who ever laid a finger on me' part." Lorde calls it the "most empowering line" she has ever written. Listen to the song below.
