Lorde sent a touching message to the family of the Cromwell College head girl Rachel Clark. The 18-year-old Grammy winner paid tribute to her fan, who died suddenly earlier in December.

Rachel, 17, was discovered dead by a fellow worker at her home on December 20. She failed to show up for work at the Golden Gate Lodge, where she was a part-time staff. Her death, which is believed to have been the result of a medical event, stunned the community. A number of people showed up at her school’s auditorium to celebrate her life.

Lorde wasn’t in the funeral, but she was able to send her love to the young achiever’s family. She sent the Clarks flowers and a note of condolence, which they put atop Rachel’s white coffin together with bouquet of fruits.

A few days after Rachel’s death, Lorde also paid tribute to her on Facebook. “thinking of rachel clark today. rest easy, beautiful girl,” she wrote, attaching Rachel’s photo. Rachel attended Lorde’s concert in Dunedin in October.

“Thank you Lorde. Our baby sister would have loved that you know who she is,” Rachel’s older sister Nicola posted. “From her sisters thank u. I can just see her smiling at the thought that u posted about her. Thank you Ella x,” another sister, Rebecca, added.

Cromwell College principal Mason Stretch praised Lorde for her kind gesture, saying it was a “real testament” to the sort of person the teen pop star is.

The twin sisters Nicola and Rebecca, as well as their parents Tony and Judy Clark, honoured the fallen member of their “tight five” on Monday.

Rachel’s death has been referred to the Coroner following a scene examination and post-mortem. It has been established that there were no suspicious circumstances regarding her death. It is thought to be a medical event that left her deceased at the scene.
