The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly scheduled an interview with former Phoenix Suns head coach and Los Angeles Clippers assistant Alvin Gentry for the vacant coaching job, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Lakers are in the hunt for their next head coach after Mike D'Antoni decided to leave the post at the end of their 2013-14 campaign. Gentry, who guided the Suns to their last Western Conference finals stint five years ago, is one of the frontrunners for the vacant Lakers coaching gig.

"After talking with Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak by phone Friday, Gentry has an interview with Kupchak and vice president Jim Buss on Wednesday to talk about replacing Mike D'Antoni, according to several NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter," the Los Angeles Times reported.

According to sources, the Lakers front office reportedly valued Gentry's offensive system, which helped the Clippers transform into one of the most prolific scoring teams in the league.

"The Lakers became more interested in talking with Gentry after speaking with several coaches and executives who raved about Gentry's offensive philosophy, according to one executive. Gentry, the offensive coach for the Clippers, was credited with helping the Clippers become the top-scoring team in the NBA during the regular season," LA Times reported.

Gentry, who also had an interview with the Utah Jazz and scheduled to talk with the Cleveland Cavaliers, also had coaching gigs with the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers and the Suns.
