Billy Boyd didn’t reprise his role as Pippin in “The Hobbit” film series, but he is taking part in the last instalment “The Battle of the Five Armies.” The 46-year-old Scottish actor will be singing the end credits song for the upcoming Peter Jackson film.

Like the first two films, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” also features an original song. “Unexpected Journey” featured the end credits song “Song of the Lonely Mountain” by Neil Finn, while “The Desolation of Smaug” had Ed Sheeran’s “I See Fire.”

For the film conclusion, Boyd will be performing “The Last Goodbye,” which is co-written by Boyd along with “The Hobbit” producers Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh.

For fans of both the film series and Boyd, it’s clear why Jackson chose him to sing for the film. Boyd, who played the hobbit Pippin in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, sang “The Edge of the Night,” also known as Pippin’s Song, in “The Return of the King.” The song was taken from the last verse of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “A Walking Song” poem, and the melody of which was composed by Boyd.

“The Battle of the Five Armies” will feature a 45-minute fight at the climax. Entertainment Weekly reported that Jackson carefully prepared the epic battle as though he was preparing for an actual full-scale fight.

“There’s a lot of logistics that have to be thought through,” he said. “We have dwarves and men and elves and orcs, all with different cultures, with different weapons, and different shields and patterns and tactics.”

Jackson was aware that a battle that long might bore the audience so he enforced a rule to prevent this.

“We have a rule that we’re not allowed to go more than two or three shots of anonymous people fighting without cutting back to our principal characters,” he explained. “Otherwise the audience just ends up with battle fatigue.”

“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Benedict Cumberbatch, Luke Evans, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee, Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood among many others. It opens in theatres on December 26 in Australia.
