‘Lucifer’ Season 1 Finale Recap (Spoilers): Who is Lucifer’s mom, plus other questions (Review)
Original air date: April 25 on Fox
“Lucifer” Season 1 finale opens a new arc for Season 2, which is expected to be largely about Lucifer Morningstar’s (Tom Ellis) mother. She may or may not be Amenadiel’s (D.B. Woodside) mother, too. But who is she, and who will play this character?
Spoiler alert: This update contains “Lucifer” Season 1 spoilers. Details include what happens in Episode 13, titled “Take Me Back To Hell.”
The finale picks up from where things ended in Episode 12 (#TeamLucifer). Chloe Decker (Lauren German) and her team try to arrest Lucy, who then concludes that Chloe has no trust in him at all. Before a bullet hits him, Amenadiel swoops him up to safety.
Contrary to Lucy’s perception, Chloe is convinced he was framed. She explains this to Dan Espinoza (Kevin Alejandro), who then connects the dots and realises Malcolm (Kevin Rankin) is behind the murder of the street con man in Lux.
Lucifer and Amenadiel team up against Malcolm, while Dan reveals to Chloe that it was him who nearly killed Malcolm. Chloe is flabbergasted, but realises they have a chance to prove Lucifer’s innocence. This puts an end to Dan’s sufferings for hiding the truth from Chloe throughout “Lucifer” Season 1.
Lucy and Amen consult psychiatrist Linda Martin (Rachael Harris), who is astonished to learn that the two are brothers. This is the lightest and funniest part of “Lucifer” Season 1 finale. Linda says something about Lucy’s attempts at starting over, which Lucy and Amen connect to Malcolm’s next move – sneaking out and creating a new identity.
Dan surrenders himself to the police, believing that his confession would help in securing jail time for Malcolm. Meanwhile, Chloe gets help from Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt). They race to the same spot where the angel brothers are headed. The best Chloe-Maze scenes so far are in “Lucifer” Season 1 finale.
Malcolm robs his old crime pals of enough money to get him a new life. The brothers catch up, but Malcolm stabs Amenadiel using Maze’s weapon, which he stole from the crime scene. Maze arrives just in time to save the angel using a piece of divine feather from Lucifer’s wings. Maze admits she does not understand why she would sacrifice so much for Amenadiel. This is Maze’s last scene in “Lucifer” Season 1.
Losing to cops, Malcolm takes a desperate measure and kidnaps Trixie (Scarlett Estevez). Chloe tries to lose Lucifer to make sure Malcolm would not hurt her daughter. But Lucifer follows her, which then results to his death – for a moment.
Lucifer is always vulnerable to regular human pains when he is around Chloe. Shortly before he dies, Lucifer calls on his dad and pleads he would be the son his father wants him to be if he could just keep Chloe safe. God responds with a vision, revealing to Lucifer that someone had escaped hell – Lucy’s mother. There has been no mention of Lucy’s mom in “Lucifer” Season 1 up to this point.
Malcolm is shocked to realise that he actually failed to kill Lucifer (again). Chloe comes in and shoots Malcolm multiple times. And just when he is about to brag about his Pentecostal coin, Lucifer shows him that his no-hell ticket is gone. With that, Malcolm becomes old news, not likely to be seen again in “Lucifer” Season 2.
After the Malcolm chaos, Lucy finds Amenadiel recuperating, but Maze is not around. The brothers, now talking like friends, talk about Lucy’s discovery. God’s message is clear, Lucy tells Amen, who observes that his brother looks afraid. Lucy then dishes the last word said in the “Lucifer” Season 1 finale: Mom.
Who is Lucifer’s mother?
“That is one of the mysteries that we dive into. In the comics and common mythology, it’s really not something that’s been established, so this is us doing a little world building,” show boss Joe Henderson told TV Line.
Is Dan still in “Lucifer” Season 2?
Henderson has confirmed that the writers will continue to “torture” Dan in the show’s sophomore year. He is family to Chloe and Trixie, complicating Lucifer’s friendship with the two. Moving forward, Lucifer and Dan would be interacting on a different, perhaps friendlier grounds.
Will fans continue to see psychiatrist Linda and Lucifer together?
“Any show could benefit from more Rachael Harris, and we definitely plan to use her more,” Henderson said in the same TV Line interview.
The first season of Fox’s “Lucifer” has taken a lot of creative leaps, veering away from the character’s image in the original DC Comics version. It is not necessarily a bad thing because the writers are able to deliver an entertaining show to the viewers – something with which they can go on board. Right now, fans who are looking forward to seeing “Lucifer” Season 2 are those who have enjoyed the character dynamics and stories in Season 1. That Lucifer’s mom from hell had escaped is icing on the cake.
