Luke Skywalker honoured by 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' actor John Boyega
During the world premiere of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” on Monday, Dec. 14 in Los Angeles, California, John Boyega caught people’s attention when he walked the red carpet wearing a black leather glove on his right hand.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Boyega, who is one of the newcomers in the ninth installment of the "Star Wars" franchise, said he wore the glove as a tribute to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), whose hand was chopped off by Darth Vader in the 1980 film “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.” In the 1983 sequel “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi,” Skywalker wore a black glove over his robotic hand.
“I’ve been waiting for this for two years,” Boyega told the publication. “To be at a point where we’ve auditioned and filmed and release this thing into the world, I feel fantastic.”
Along with his black leather glove on his right hand, Boyega also wore a custom purple Versace suit at the world premiere of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in Hollywood.
In the film, the actor plays a redeemed First Order stormtrooper named Finn, who has been made aware of Skywalker's history. Boyega’s character is in possession of the lightsaber that belonged to Skywalker and Anakin before him.
In another interview with New York Daily News, Boyega revealed that they filmed some “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” scenes in the Abu Dhabi desert. He saiid that many people probably think it is CG, but it is really on location with no green screens “just out in the desert with all these explosions going off.”
“You could feel the heat on top of the heat of the desert, which makes it so intense, but it’s so fun to film,” Boyega added.
Before playing Finn in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the actor played Bambi in the 2014 drama film “Imperial Dreams” opposite Glenn Plummer and Rotimi.
