A popular millionaire technology entrepreneur, Turnbull is behind the Australian opposition's flagship revised plan for a national high-speed internet service, and is himself a not-so-secret weapon for this Saturday's federal election being well-liked by both business and the public. More left-leaning than his successor as party leader, Tony Abbott, Turnbull is consistently chosen in opinion polls as the country's preferred leader over his right-wing boss, with his appeal extending to swing voters. The Twitter-sphere lit up today as Australian Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull tweeted his latest travel accounts from Melbourne to Geelong by train, drawing public attention back to Bronwyn Bishop, who remains embroiled in her travel expenses related controversies. Comparisons were immediately drawn between the expenses and luxury involved in the travel of the two politicians.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Mr. Turnbull is quite known for taking public transport and not shy about making it known. The multimillionaire minister provided a step by step guide today on how to travel from Melbourne to Geelong by public transport, but his rendezvous with the public service didn’t end there; he further tweeted about his tram ride in Melbourne which he seemed to thoroughly enjoyed. “After 2 interesting tram trips last night now on the 109 on Collins St to Sth Cross to get the train to Geelong to visit,” tweeted Mr. Turnbull.

Ms. Bishop on the other hand has been facing severe criticism from several fronts about her $5227 helicopter ride to Geelong from Melbourne. Even though she has reimbursed the money, her past travel expenses under scrutiny by the Opposition party, with former Labor MP Jennie George recently disputing claims made by the Speaker that she had travelled to Albury in 2006 on official business.

The Guardian reported that during the Albury tour, which incurred an expense of $600, also involved an attendance to former Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella’s wedding. Ms. Bishop has however refused to provide the necessary documents to justify her 2006 travel claims.
