In a bizarre act of protest against Russia now being a police state, Russian artist Pyotr Pavlensky, naked, had deliberately nailed his own balls into the cobblestones of Red Square, nearby Lenin's Mausoleum. He used a hammer to bore holes into his testicles to fasten them onto the grounds. While being fixed firmly to the ground, he looked at his scrotum as if curious of what was happening.

"A naked artist, looking at his balls nailed to the Kremlin pavement, is a metaphor for the apathy, political indifference, and fatalism of contemporary Russian society," Pavlensky wrote in a statement explaining his strange act of protest.

He explained that bureaucratic mess shall not deprive the society of its ability to act against the triumph of a Russian state run by police. Like having his balls nailed to the grounds, Russia "nailed" its people in an inaction state as the society continue to fund its law enforcement agencies to be able to continue with its tyranny.

His statement was published in Russian by the grain.ru Web site.

Artist Pavlensky staged his bizarre protest on the very day of "Day of the Ministry of Internal Affairs" to create the controversy and awareness from both locales and tourists strolling at the Red Square, nearby Lenin's Mausoleum.

However, police were prompt to take Pavlensky into custody. They first covered him with a blanket to hide him from the public's attention and then took him to a hospital where he can be given appropriate medical aid.

According to a report from The Moscow Times, the incident at the Red Square was not the first time that artist Pavlensky staged an out-of-the-ordinary protest against the Russian government.

In July 2012, he sewed his mouth shut while carrying a banner in front of the Kazan Cathedral in St Petersburg. He was then protesting against the imprisonment of the popular Pussy Riot band.

In May 2013, he staged another shocking protest as he was left alone in front of the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly Building, naked and wrapped with barbed wire. As a result of this, police took him into custody and made him undergo psychiatric examinations. However, results revealed that he was legally in his proper mind.
