A man who was ranting about government corruption has slashed his wrists during the live broadcast of the U.S. morning programme “Today Show” on Thursday. The incident left a gory scene, and caused the show to evacuate their outdoor set at the Rockefeller Plaza in New York.

As NY Daily News reports, Pak Chong Mar was unkempt and appeared deranged as he shouted about the injustice of the government outside the “Today” show set. He used broken English to tell people who were there to watch the live broadcast of the show how the Internal Revenue Service “ruined his life.”

Mar was apparently tried to get bystanders to read a pile of papers that appeared to be IRS documents then tossed the stack into the air.

Around 7:50 a.m., he pulled out a pocket knife and yelled “I’m going to cut myself” twice before actually cutting his wrist. Someone wrestled the knife from him, but Mar was able to pull out another knife and slashed his other wrist.

Cops and security guards tackled him down as they waited for ambulance to arrive.

A witness told the NY Daily News that Mar was bleeding so profusely that the officers used their feet to restrain him.

Mar was then loaded into an ambulance and taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where he is expected to survive. No one else was injured during the incident.

“Today” hosts Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie were nearby to shoot the live broadcast of the show. Their cameras weren’t able to capture the incident, though.

Nevertheless, the crew evacuated the area and transferred to the studio.

“We’re opening the half hour inside the studio because there was an incident out in the plaza,” Lauer told the viewers. “There’s a man out there who attempted to harm himself with a knife. He did manage to harm himself. He was controlled by our security team out there, although he did harm himself in some way.

“He is now being attended to by medical personnel. There was a knife involved as we just mentioned so we are keeping that area clear for law enforcement out there right now and getting out there to confuse the situation at all.”

The hosts then commended their security people for doing a fantastic job.
