Manchester United has created numerous opportunities throughout the night at the Anoeta Stadium, but came up short of scoring a goal.

Perhaps the most notable one came when a penalty kick was awarded, at the 70th minute, in United's favor after Ashley Young was tripped inside the box.

Striker Robin van Persie calmly took the spot-kick, but was denied by the woodwork.

Speaking after the match, Wayne Rooney reacted positively and backed his striking parter up.

"Of course [everyone misses from time to time]," Rooney told PA Sport, as cited on manutd.com.

"Most forwards in the world miss penalties and that won't affect him, I'm sure."

"We're disappointed we didn't get the three points as we had the best chances. Overall, though, we can see the positives. We got a clean sheet and we're still top of the group."

Rooney insisted that coming up with a stalemate against Real Sociedad was not so bad of an outcome as they were playing an away game.

"I think coming away from home in the Champions League is always difficult. But we created the better chances and I feel we should have won the game," he added.

"A draw wasn't the worst result for us, though, particuarly given the other game finished 0-0 as well. But we're disappointed we didn't get the three points."

Red Devils manager David Moyes shared Rooney's opinion, but was more critical of how the officiating went, which was highlighted by holding midfielder Marouane Fellaini's dismissal.

"Football will tell you that you need to take your chances and opportunities when they come along. We missed a big opportunity tonight, but we're still in a strong position," said Moyes.

"I think it [Fellaini's dismissal] was a 'totting up', at the end of the day. It was harsh, because he played well."

"I thought there were a few strange decisions all night. Throughout the night, there were a few things that I found hard - the crowd whistled for a lot of things."
