Manny Pacquiao Not Yet Retiring; to Discuss in Macau 5th Bout with Marquez
Despite his losses to Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley in 2012, eight-division boxing champion Manny Pacquiao is not hanging his gloves yet.
Reports said that Pacquiao will possibly meet with Marquez in Macau to discuss a fifth bout.
In a virtual confirmation of the much anticipated fourth rematch, Top Rank boss Bob Arum disclosed that Marquez has met with the promoter to discuss the terms of the fight of the year.
Marquez, who gave as his condition for a Pacquiao rematch a purse higher than the $6 million he got in his last ring match with the Pacman, will attend the April 7 fight card in Macau which will feature rising Chinese boxer Zou Shiming and WBO/WBA flyweight champion Brian Viloria, who is also a Filipino like Pacquiao.
Mr Arum said he will bring Pacquiao and his wife Jinkee to that bout which will give the two pugilists a chance to discuss a fifth bout. Other boxers that Marquez is considering a match with, besides Pacquiao, are Bradley, who now holds the WBO welterweight crown and Mexican boxer Brandon Rios.
The openness of Marquez to another bout with Pacquiao - given the right financial incentive - is a turnaround from the Mexican boxer's previous stand on not being interested in fighting Manny again amid rumours that Marquez is considering retirement.
"I think for me there is no point [in a fifth fight]. We already achieve the desired result. Then why do it?, Opposing Views quoted Marquez's previous statement.
Another Mexican boxer, Marco Antonio Barrera, whom Pacquiao beat before, said the Filipino boxing champ has still enough firepower to battle the other major boxers. He insisted that Pacquiao was caught only by a lucky punch in the December 2012 battle with Marquez.
Barrera is in the Philippines to support the fight of his countryman, Moises Fuentes, against another Filipino defending champion Donnie Nietes.
