Margot Robbie has another iconic character lined up. The Australian actress has reportedly landed the role of DC super villain Harley Quinn in the upcoming film “Suicide Squad.”

Sources told Collider that the 24-year-old former “Neighbours” star will be playing Harley Quinn, The Joker’s jester costume-wearing sidekick. If the rumour proves to be true, this will be the first time Harley will be portrayed on the big screen.

Earlier reports claimed that Cara Delevingne was being considered for an unnamed female villain role, which could be Harley. The English model even a cartoon drawing of herself as Harley on Instagram, all but confirming her involvement in the film. However, it appears that she has lost the part to Robbie.

As for The Joker, Jared Leto’s name is a strong contender. According to The Wrap, the Academy Award winner is in talks to join the film. Tom Hardy and Will Smith are also in discussion to star in the David Ayer project. Jesse Eisenberg, who is playing Superman’s archenemy Lex Luthor in “Batman v Superman,” may reprise the role as well.

The early drafts for the “Suicide Squad” originally did not include either The Joker or Harley, but it appears that they are now being included in the screenplay, which is scheduled for release in August 2016. The comic revolves around the team of anti-hero super villains who work for the U.S. government in exchange for lighter prison sentence.

Also in 2016, Robbie will be seen playing Jane Porter in “Tarzan” opposite “True Blood” star Alexander Skarsgard. The film adaptation of the classic novel will hit theatres in the U.S. a month before the “Suicide Squad,” which meant Robbie would be very busy promoting two films for the year.

In 2015, she will be in two films as well, in the romantic comedy “Focus” with Will Smith, and in the sci-fi flick “Z for Zachariah” with Chris Pine and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
