Maria Sharapova Proud Of Her Run In The 2014 Season
Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova has missed half of 2013 due to a shoulder injury, but she has made a comeback and managed to rise back to the world rankings. Sharapova currently ranks second in the world, and she couldn't be happier with her 2014 campaign.
Sharapova has had memorable runs in 2014. She has returned at full health after having undergone shoulder surgery. Sharapova said she is happy for being able to achieve far more than her initial goal for the season.
"I had one goal, and that was to try to remain as healthy as possible, to keep my shoulder strong," Sharapova said via Tennis.com. "I've done an incredible job of that."
She has a record of 49-13 this season. She won her fifth Grand Slam title at the French Open. In addition to the Roland Garros title, Sharapova also won titles in Stuttgart, Madrid, and Beijing. Sharapova said that she didn't miss a lot of tournaments this year compared to her 2013 season, where she has pulled out of several events including the US Open, Tokyo, Beijing, and the WTA Championships.
Sharapova credits her accomplishments in 2014 to the man who built the foundation, her coach former Dutch professional tennis player Sven Groeneveld. She hired Groeveneld in the latter part of 2013. Groeveneld has previously coached Monica Seles, Tommy Haas and Ana Ivanovic.
Sharapova finds new success in her new team. She said that she's happy that she has conquered some of the toughest matches and won trophies in major as well as minor tournaments with her new team at the time that she was still trying to keep healthy from her injury.
"Sven is a great listener, and yet when I need it he pushes me, but also a very calm, positive person," Sharapova said of Groeveneld. "I think that's also nice to have in a team."
In 2015, Sharapova has confirmed to take part in the Brisbane International, with her boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov. Sharapova and reigning champion Dimitrov will also play in the 22nd edition of the Mexican Open, or also known as the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco.
