Mariah Carey's Boss LA Reid Does Not Believe Her Song 'Infinity' Can Reach No. 1 Or Even The Radio
Mariah Carey’s boss LA Reid said that her song “Infinity” may not reach the success she wants. The boss did not mince words, saying her superstar status does not guarantee her a top-ranking single.
In an interview with Billboard magazine, LA Reid said that Mariah Carey should not expect her song “Infinity” to reach no. 1. The boss even said the veteran singer should just be glad that radio stations would even pick up her song. The Epic Records CEO thinks Mariah or anyone who is already established in the industry or "music legends," should not be riding on their popularity because it does not guarantee anything. He said that Mariah should just be happy whenever her song can be played in the radio. "To even be on the radio at this point in her career is a huge accomplishment, because radio doesn't cater to veteran artists or legends," he explained. "Radio caters to in-the-moment stars."
He compared Mariah to other iconic entertainment stars that have no. 1 albums, such as Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. He said none of these icons would have a no. 1 hit now when they would produce an album. He also cited Prince.
He said as her boss, he would be happy just to have her music get on the radio. For him, that would already be an accomplishment. Naturally, he said they would love to be on the top spot, because he is “greedy.” However, he is also “realistic” and knows that the odds of that happening are slim.
It can be remembered that Mariah Carey just re-signed to work with LA Reid last March. She was with Def Jam for quite a time but she decided to go back “home” to relaunch her already floundering career. With LA Reid, she managed to release a greatest-hits collection and even launched a Las Vegas concert residency like Britney Spears. Speaking with LA Times, the “Always Be My Baby” shared that she felt lost for quite a time before she returned to Reid. With him, she said she can still do work that she can feel proud of.
