Marriage: The Solution to Men's Health Problems [VIDEO]
Young Australian men are more likely to die earlier and hospitalised with an injury than women. According to the Australian Institution of Health and Welfare, research shows the solution to improve the health and lifespan of an Aussie man is a simple one: get married.
The findings of the study suggest that Australian men born in between 2009 and 2011 can expect to live until the age of 79.7 while women live longer by 5 years at 84.2 years.
Men are more likely to die younger because of exposure to health risks and poor lifestyle habits. Young Australian men are three times more likely to die from a vehicular accident, plane crash or suicide than women.
The research study also showed men are more likely to die from congenital illness, sudden infant death syndrome and drowning.
Data also showed that in 2010 and 2011, there were 99,000 cases of injury leading to hospitalisation of males up to 24 years of age. Men had the most probability to die from injuries than women.
Australian men who are 17 to 24 years old are also obese and overweight. Young men were also likely to drink every week than women, and two in five men will probably sustain injury due to excessive alcohol consumption.
In 2011, young males had the most commonly notified sexually transmitted disease, chlamydia, although more women of the same age also have the same infectious disease. In 2012, males with chlamydia totaled 17,741.
To improve their health, the research study hints at men getting married and seek stable employment. Married Australian men have longer lifespans compared with single men. Men who have jobs are also less likely to say they have poor health than unemployed males.
Dr. Steve Hambleton, president of the Australian Medical Association believed that the glorification of alcohol and heavy endorsements by famous sports athletes are partly to blame for the health problems of men.
He also said Australia's obesity problem should also be addressed through better education campaigns and food labeling. Young men should also be encouraged to get off the couch and start increasing their physical activities.
Getting married can help improve men's health because there is someone else who cares and thinks about men living a healthy lifestyle.
