‘MasterChef Australia’ 2016 recap and spoilers: Chloe and Brett melt under pressure of savoury ice cream challenge
Contestants are set to transform underground car park into dungeon of decadence
Two pop-up restaurants down, and two to go for the remainder of the daunting Heston Blumenthal week. In episode 42 of “MasterChef Australia” Season 8, which aired on June 27, the remaining contestants had to think outside the box to make ice cream with a twist. They had to go all out and push the boundaries to convince the special guest chef, as well as judges George Calombaris, Gary Mehigan and Matt Preston that they don’t deserve to be in the elimination round. Unfortunately for Chloe Bowles and Brett Carter, their savoury ice cream flavours did not make the judges shiver with delight.
Chloe and Brett will be in the firing line on the upcoming elimination challenge at the end of the week. They would also miss the next pop-up restaurant challenge, which George promises to absolutely blow the “MasterChef Australia” hopefuls’ minds.

Network Ten posted a sneak peek of Tuesday’s episode. Another day means another pop-up restaurant, and this time, it’s all about chocolate. Six contestants are fighting to stay out of elimination, and they have to walk fast and furiously to create a dish that will stand out. While one team hits the jackpot, for another, it’s a gamble that will see two home cooks pay the ultimate price.
The trailer showed another set of groupings: Harry Foster will be paired with Mimi Baines; Matt Sinclair will team up with Elena Duggan; and Theresa Visintin will have to work together with Elise Franciskovic. Fans wonder whether Theresa will continue her winning streak, after impressing the judges with her dishes for the past two pop-up restaurant challenges.
“MasterChef Australia” Season 8 recap
The remaining contestants trudged down to Brighton beach to meet Heston and the judges, who said that the colourful bathing boxes will serve as their shops for the day. The judges informed the “MasterChef Australia” hopefuls that some 500 hungry customers will descend upon them, looking for a refreshing snack: savoury ice cream. Heston said that the flavours should trigger nostalgia – they should take them back to their childhood.
Once again, the contestants were divided into teams of two: Matt and Harry (blue); Theresa and Elena (yellow); Mimi and Elise (red);’ and Chloe and Brett (green). The teams started to get cracking on their respective dishes. Immediately, the yellow team hit a snag when Theresa couldn’t get their waffle cones together. Heston came over and advised her to put more sugar on them, and it worked. When he got to taste one of the flavours prepared by the red team, he warned Mimi and Elise that it’s too sweet and it may not fit the brief.
Over on the green team’s bench, Heston and George were confused about the flavours that Chloe and Brett described. George also became concened about fattiness of the goat cheese, which may ruin their dish. However, Chloe said she had tasted one before and it was good so she stood her ground and proceeded with their plan. This was not the first time that Chloe defied the mentors’ advice, which resulted to disaster. She also did not heed Curtis Stone's advice before, leading her and Nicolette Stathopoulos to the pressure test.

Chloe knew they were in trouble when they started churning out the ice cream from the machine and its texture was completely wrong. Unlike the other teams’ smooth and silky ice cream, theirs were a powdery mess.
When it was time to serve the judges, the blue team’s vegemite and panko crumb ice cream was received well for its texture. The judges loved their next flavour, gazpacho icy pole, which was deemed clean and refreshing. Harry and Matt’s prawn cocktail ice cream sent the judges over the moon – it looked awesome, the cup waffles were impressive and overall it was a great concept.
The yellow team also received raves for their ice cream dishes. Their chilli, lime and coriander icy poles brought a smile to the judges’ faces, and were likened to a frozen Thai dipping sauce. Theresa and Elena suffered a setback with their lemon pine nuts and rosemary ice cream, which were judged as bland. However, they totally bounced back with their mustard, bacon and French fries ice cream. The judges said it was the best one they’ve had so far.
Red team’s sour cream and chives ice cream earned great reviews from the judges. Heston said it’s delicious and Gary commented that the consistency of the ice cream was bang-on. However, they didn’t like Elise and Mimi’s pea and ham ice cream. George said that despite the good-looking cones, the ice cream itself is no good. The pair’s ginger, cucumber and mint ice block also yielded negative comments. Heston reiterated what he said during the preparation – it has gone over to the sweet side.
More disaster awaited the judges when it was time to taste the green team’s dishes. Chloe and Brett’s beetroot and goat’s cheese ice cream elicited an “Oh God” comment from George, but not in a good way. He said it has gone fatty and buttery, which is why it also melted so fast. The judges definitely did not enjoy the ice cream, which Matt said was one complete disaster. The red team was able to redeem themselves with the mascarpone, rosemary and bacon ice cream. The judges said they had elegant skinny cones and the dish was pretty tasty. However, their last salvo, the carrot and ginger icy pole, also ran into trouble. It had inconsistency problems and there was no flavour of carrot.
It’s the moment of truth, and the judges named Theresa and Elena’s mustard ice cream as the dish of the day. The yellow team’s icy pole was also praised by the judges. Also a standout was the blue team, with their gazpacho icy pole and prawn cocktail ice cream. At the end of the cook, it was decided that the green team’s ice cream dishes failed to measure up to the other team’s dishes. Chloe and Brett were told that they’ll be joining Heather Day and Trent Harvey on the elimination round at the end of the week.
