Matt Damon, Ben Affleck hit with gay rumours over 'Good Will Hunting'
Matt Damon recently shared his thoughts about how a person’s sexuality plays a major role in Hollywood. The actor recalled a personal experience wherein he and best friend and fellow actor Ben Affleck were thought to be gay lovers because of their collaboration on “Good Will Hunting.”
In a candid interview with The Guardian, Damon talked about how working with Affleck on “Good Will Hunting” not only brought them fame but also questions about their sexuality. The "Bourne" actor revealed they were hit with gay rumours since it was just them two guys working on a script together.
“It’s just like any piece of gossip… and it put us in a weird position of having to answer, you know what I mean? Which was then really deeply offensive,” he said.
Damon has since appeared in several movies following the success of “Good Will Hunting” three years after the script was bought by Castle Rock in 1994. He spearheaded the original “Bourne” film series as well as displayed his versatility in acting in several action films. However, Damon took a different path in the 2013 film “Behind the Candelabra,” where he played as Michael Douglas' character's gay lover. However, the actor said there’s a difference between a reel gay and a real gay when it comes to Hollywood.
During his interview with The Guardian, the actor thought that “it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly” since it would affect their careers. Citing Rupert Everett, Damon said the former's career was affected after he came out as a homosexual.
“In terms of actors, I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you period. And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play,” he told The Guardian.
According to the Daily Beast, the popularity of Damon gives him the power to influence people to change their views on certain public and social matters. However, it appears that his opinions about sexuality do not help the LGBT community in getting support from Hollywood personalities in their continuous fight for equality. Instead, Damon only proved his being inhospitable towards the LGBT community.
