In the new GQ issue, A-list actor and all-around good guy Damon takes a swing at "Bourne" screenwriter Tony Gilroy.

"The Bourne Ultimatum" is the third film of the popular franchise. It is also Gilroy's third time on board as a writer, after having penned (or co-penned) the first two "Bourne" movies.

For "Ultimatum", the studio agreed to let Gilroy write just one draft of the script, without provisions for notes and rewrites. According to Damon, the results left much to be desired.

First the Oscar winner criticized Universal Pictures for landing the entire production in hot water.

"It's really the studio's fault for putting themselves in that position. I don't blame Tony for taking a boatload of money and handing in what he handed in," Damon tells GQ.

And then he had some harsh words for the director Paul Greengrass even as he called him a "great director".

"It's just that it was unreadable. This is a career-ender. I mean, I could put this thing up on eBay and it would be game over for that dude. It's terrible. It's really embarrassing," Damon says.

"He was having a go, basically, and he took his money and left," he adds.

This proved to be a major obstacle in production, who found themselves with no head and eventually the shooting script was penned by George Nolfi and Scott Z. Burns, with input from Greengrass.

Later, Damon contacted the GQ writer to apologize for his criticisms.

"If I didn't respect him and appreciate his talent, then I really wouldn't have cared. My feelings were hurt. That's all. And that's exactly why I shouldn't have said anything. This is between me and him. So saying anything publicly is f--king stupid and unprofessional and just kind of douchey of me," he says.

Gilroy's camp declined to comment, leaving the inquiries to Universal Pictures. A representative from the studio, Kori Bernards, attempted to defuse the situation by heaping praise on both Damon and Gilroy.

""We could not imagine replacing Matt as Jason Bourne, which is why we're so excited Tony's script creates a fantastic new character in The Bourne Legacy and also leaves open the option for Matt to return. Tony has done everything we've asked of him on each of the Bourne films, and his work has been a huge asset to the franchise," Bernards says.

She is talking about the fourth installment in the franchise that is currently in the works, "Bourne Legacy".

In the Daily News, Damon reveals he opted out of the film when the director of the first two decided not to return.

"He just went, 'I'm not sure we can guarantee it's going to be as good as the other ones.' And that was enough for me to take a step back," Damon recalls.

Both Damon and the new "Bourne" star Jeremy Renner are not dismissing the possibility of a return of the amnesiac character.

In fact, Renner reveals to MTV that the two veteran actors are looking forward to it.
