Actor Matthew Newton is on his way to recovery.

He arrived in Sydney during the weekend after completing his stint in rehab, wearing a black shirt and sunglasses.

Friends welcomed him at the Sydney Airport and was led towards a waiting car.

Rumors have it that he is staying at a CBD hotel.

Newton finished his 28-day program at the Malvern Private Hospital and checked out on Friday.

Rachael Taylor, Newton's rumored fiancee, was not in Sydney to welcome him back. The Australian actress visited him at the clinic on Wednesday before going to the Pilbara region of Western Australia late last week to resume the filming of her project, the Red Dog.

Patti Newton, the actor's mother, said yesterday in a statement that her son was still recovering from unspecified personal conflicts.

"It is a health issue and he needs time to recover," she said.

She and her husband Bert believed their son's privacy was the most important, adding, "We support him and we love him and we just want people to leave him alone so he can mend."

Newton's agent Titus Day said that his client is doing really well.

Gillian Bowen, Newton's publicist, denied rumors that he has put his career on hold and decided to take a break for the rest of the year.

"There is no truth to that," she said.

"Absolutely nothing has been discussed - it's too early at this stage."
