Actor Matthew Newton was recently admitted in a rehabilitation clinic and stayed there for 28 days. His experience there has inspired him to become a better person, according to the Underbelly star himself.

Newton, who is the son of showbiz golden couple Bert and Patti Newton, was admitted at Melbourne's Malvern Private Hospital in April. The said facility specialises in drug and alcohol issues.

It is unclear why the actor was in rehab. However, he told gossip magazine New Idea that the fight against his personal problems is not yet done.

"It is very easy to play the tough guy," Newton said.

"I played that role for a while - but it's a very unrewarding role.

"You don't get a lot back. At the moment, I am a work in progress.

"I don't think there comes a time where you go: 'Great, Now I'm fine, now I'm sorted'.

"It's a constantly evolving process. For me, it's about working towards being a happier, better person."

He adds that the path towards self discovery has allowed him to meet some wonderful people along the way.

"One of the things I learnt was that I am just like everyone else - I am flawed," he said.

"Everyone has things in their life they wish they'd done better and everyone has things that they do well and I think, it's about finding the balance between those things."

Newton is happy that his girlfriend Rachael Taylor has been giving him the support he needs during one of the darkest periods of his life.

"She is a wonderful woman," he said.

"She's been extremely supportive and has taught me a lot of things.

"We want the best for each other. She is my chief source of inspiration."
